An Iowa Super Group?
There are rumors from central Iowa of the hottest music explosion to ever hit the Midwest music scene. It started with some rumblings about Jerry Lorenson, the talented young front man for the eastern Iowa band Towncrier, gigging with the Josh Davis Band, the rising star from Des Moines. Then tales of a new sound with a sharp edge and a polished, yet raw feel drifted across the social networks. Could it be, is there a super-group being spawned in the heartland? It Came From Iowa…
by musicboss on Jan.28, 2010, under Nightlife
Over 20 years ago, in a smoky little hotel bar, a small group of people started something funny…really funny! A promoter named Mueller convinced local jokers that if they take the stage, the rural citizens of this fine land will come…and they did. From that modest incubator, a comedy scene was born in Sioux City, Iowa. A scene that spawned several top bananas. Three of these bananas, Jent Monk, Garie Lewis and Don Reese left the cozy little nest and went on to the bright lights and big cities sharing the comic skills they honed in this corner of Iowa. This weekend, Sioux City comedy fans have a chance to see one of their comic sons in a familiar setting.
Don Reese will be performing this Friday and Saturday night at the Last Friday Comedy Club in the show hall of the Sioux City Eagles. Reese has been touring around the country playing some of the top clubs with his “monstrous” brand of humor. His unique, fast paced delivery has made him one of the most sought after comics working today. Warming up the crowd will be Minneapolis funny man Paul Weiss. The shows are scheduled to begin at 8:00 pm. Tickets for the shows are $8.00 and can be purchased in advance at the Eagles, 416 Jackson Street. The Last Friday Comedy Club makes a donation from each show to the Siouxland Soup Kitchen, so club patrons are asked to bring a non-perishable food item as well.
Comedy born in Iowa, raised in Iowa and back in Iowa for two nights only.
