No, it’s not a scene from the Big Easy, it’s the fourth annual River-Cade Fat Tuesday on Friday! Sioux City’s granddaddy of fun is joining forces with the Sioux City Live Music Club to present the big Mardi Gras bash. Their goal is to host the biggest Mardi Gras party in the area, and Club members say they are well on their way to reaching that goal.

Dikki Du and the Zydeco Krewe will perform this Friday at the Sioux City Live Music Club.

This Friday, February 19 the showroom at the Sioux City Eagles Aerie will be transformed into a hopping night on Bourbon Street. One of the most in-demand bands in New Orleans, Dikki Du and the Zydeco Krewe will be setting the tone for the party. The band is under the skilled leadership of Troy Carrier, brother of Chubby Carrier, a familiar figure to many Sioux City music fans. Carrier and his band are carrying the torch of zydeco music while creating a fresh sound of their own. Fans of traditional cajun beats and zydeco “virgins” will be drugged by the infectious dance beat of the Krewe.

Area residents can enhance their Mardi Gras experience with a crawfish boil, costumes and beads…lots of beads. The boil is being prepared by members of the Krewe de Charlie Sioux. It will include fresh crawfish, sausage, sweet corn, potatoes and a tasty cajun seasoning. The boil is available for a small $5.00 fee.

Whether you’re a Mardi Gras veteran or a novice, the River-Cade board and the Sioux City Live Music Club members promise a grand NOLA experience.

A promoter named Mueller convinced local jokers that if they take the stage, the rural citizens of this fine land will come…and they did. From that modest incubator, a comedy scene was born in Sioux City, Iowa. A scene that spawned several top bananas. Three of these bananas, Jent Monk, Garie Lewis and Don Reese left the cozy little nest and went on to the bright lights and big cities sharing the comic skills they honed in this corner of Iowa. This weekend, Sioux City comedy fans have a chance to see one of their comic sons in a familiar setting.

Don Reese will be performing this Friday and Saturday night at the Last Friday Comedy Club in the show hall of the Sioux City Eagles. Reese has been touring around the country playing some of the top clubs with his “monstrous” brand of humor. His unique, fast paced delivery has made him one of the most sought after comics working today. Warming up the crowd will be Minneapolis funny man Paul Weiss. The shows are scheduled to begin at 8:00 pm.  Tickets for the shows are $8.00 and can be purchased in advance at the Eagles, 416 Jackson Street. The Last Friday Comedy Club makes a donation from each show to the Siouxland Soup Kitchen, so club patrons are asked to bring a non-perishable food item as well.

The non-profit club is proud to present the debut of Brad Hoshaw and the Seven Deadlies, a rising star in the Americana folk/rock scene. Friday, January 22 Hoshaw and his all-star band will be performing in concert at the Eagles music hall in downtown Sioux City. Opening the show will be Sioux City’s own Thieving Magpies.

Hoshaw and his band have been gaining fans around the land with their powerful live shows. Hoshaw’s songwriting skills and earthy vocals reach out and pull audiences into his world. The experience becomes almost religious. They were voted Best Adult Alternative Rock Band by Omaha Entertainment Awards in 2008 and are nominated for 5 more awards this year. Hoshaw started his career as a solo artist playing clubs and bars around the country for almost 14 years before forming the Seven Deadlies. Now with the release of a self-titled CD, he is receiving even more critical acclaim as well as a loyal fan base. Now, Sioux City music lovers can experience the impact of this unique artist.

One Northwest Iowa band has embraced this musical union with a passion. The Jacob Lee Band is gaining fans throughout the area with a rocking mix of classic rock and blues. Led by young guitar wizard Jacob Lee, this band of college students play a brand of music that was created before they were born. The set list might include some Hendrix, ZZ Top and maybe even AC/DC. Lee drives this high-energy show with his strong guitar performance, however lead singer Natha Ohlinger draws audiences in with her captivating voice and delivery. Drummer Russell Weller and bass player Jeff Kuhns provide a solid rhythm section to anchor the soaring Lee.

The band has been performing throughout the Midwest including an appearance at the 2009 Harvest Jam in Chicago and an opening slot for rockers LA Guns. Sioux City music fans will have a chance to catch this young band at the Chesterfield on Friday, January 22. Weller says they are excited to return to Sioux City and look forward to meeting new fans.
