The Best Bar Band Ever?

by musicboss on Oct.08, 2009, under Nightlife

They formed in Waukesha, Wisconsin in the early 1980s. They’ve toured all over the world playing some of the largest festivals and clubs on the circuit. Their 2008 release “Still” is the tenth album in their impressive catalog of music. They played a small bar in Council Bluffs, Iowa and blew the room away.

The BoDeans

The BoDeans

That’s right, the BoDeans performed Wednesday, October 7 at the Whiskey Roadhouse for about three hundred rabid fans. The small venue proved to be a perfect setting for these classic Midwest rockers. Their “bar show” was a spiritual experience compared to my previous live BoDeans experience at Saturday in the Park, a festival boasting over 25,000 listeners. Their earthy lyrics and soulful instrumentals were right at home in the intimate Roadhouse.

Co-founder and lead guitarist Kurt Neumann slid his smooth guitar licks in and out of the tunes like a knitter weaving a beautiful shawl. His skills are powerful, yet unassuming. One of the finer moments was the bands presentation of the hit “Naked” during which co-founder and rhythm guitarist Sam Llanas stated, “I hate for this one to end.” His slowed version of “Runaway” showed the band’s versatility with the old and the new sound. The seasoned crowd was on their feet for most of the show, lip-syncing to many of the tunes and cheering wildly as they made their way through two decades of hits.

Matt Whipkey opened the show with an alt-rock sampler from his newest CD, “Instant Heart”. It was a great evening of live music, proving that a band like the BoDeans are at their best in the environment which spawned them… a bar.
