WHAT DO WE DO NOW?

Have you guys noticed there isn’t much going on in the wide world of sports? College basketball is in full swing I guess, but everyone knows it doesn’t matter until March. Australian Open anyone? Yeah, I really didn’t think so. What do you do in the week off before the Super Bowl? Go check out Sioux City Musketeers hockey. They will be in town Friday the 30th and Saturday the 31st at the Tyson Events Center. Sioux City has won 5 of their last 7 games so now would be a good time to go down and check them out. If anyone else has a suggestion just let me know, I’m seasonally depressed.
I am happy, however, that I get to blog about the Chicago Cubs for the first time this year. If you haven’t seen in the last week the Cubs were bought by the Rickett’s family for $900 million dollars. I have a little problem with that in the fact that you can buy a major league franchise for $900 million or you can spend half that and buy 3 players like the New York Yankees. You make the call. Either way it looks like a matter of when and not if Cy Young winner Jake Peavy makes his way over to Chicago.
Finally on a sad note, women’s basketball has lost a great teacher, coach, and an inspiration. Kay Yow, North Carolina State’s women’s basketball coach for 34 years passed away after a 2 decade long battle with breast cancer. She won 737 games as a head coach but the way she handled herself during her battle was nothing short of remarkable.

The sports scene is certainly slow right now…just wait until after the Super Bowl when we’ll have to put up with three weeks of endless specualation about which men’s basketball conference is better, the ACC or the Big East. As for the Australian Open, one storyline to keep an eye on is Andy Roddick, who defeated the number three seed last night. He’s got Federer tomorrow night (2:30 a.m., ESPN2, for all those nocturnal types).
I can’t say much about the Cubs situation because the Minnesota Twins don’t spend money. On anything. At all. Except for the open-air icebox they’ll open in 2010.
Moving on, the courage Kay Yow showed through her long battle with breast cancer was miraculous. We can all learn the lesson of perseverance from Yow.
